impose can’t handle the truth

Smith Westerns
It’s about time that bands start listening to their peers. There is a difference between being influenced by past songs and copying bands you can share the stage with. Smith Westerns, a handful of sweet young things still in their teens, put out a garage rock album, and if they listened to music that is currently popular, then maybe it wouldn’t be as drab.
Smith Westerns skirt the issue of musical ignorance with the press’ aid of marketing their age as an advantage – and it is. To be seventeen again, discovering T Rex for the first time and stealing virginities left and right is worth writing songs about. These guys loved T Rex so much they put the Bang a Gong guitar riff directly into their own Girl in Love. Some of the other songs like Tonight are tinged with an early Phil Spector sound, which lends itself helpful to Smith Westerns’ pop-punk lyrics about liking girls and thinking things are cool. These influences are what baits the listener throughout the album, and invites the temptation to press the repeat button before the song is even over.
The album takes an unfortunate turn from the beginning when Smith Westerns immediately play the cliché surf guitar riffs that bands should be avoiding like herpes these days, and use vocal effects that are unavoidably Black Lips gone cheap. The GarageBand antics they pull make them sound like a Chipmunks song. Try listening to My Heart all the way through without screaming, “ALVIN!” Because they push all the levels to red and clang away at their guitars like they live on the west coast in 1973, an album that could be developing the garage rock genre ends up treading the same water as the rest of them. After four songs of the short album, the word pedestrian comes to mind, and it’s time to skip through the rest. Of course, the kids are young and have a lot of time to hone their sound and hopefully get a space echo. It’s a band to watch, but not to listen to (yet).

NAMES have been CHANGED

December 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

my friend gave me old girlfriend letters as a precedent to practice good grammar.

HEY MIKE!

Glad I got to stop by and say HI over the weekend.
Did you still want me to go with you to the election par-tay Tuesday night?
I’m trying to get my week organized, and I have a ton of stuff going on this week, including going to Athens to visit with mom while she’s in town.
Let me know, cause I will still need to get a new dress. I have a black one with ruffles at the top – you saw me in it after flight of the conchords, and I have the dress that I wore to last years christmas party, or I have a dress that is long with blue and white flowers? – not so much a cocktail dress though.

Anyway, lemme know soon so I can plan ahead :) Have a good one!!!!

Best regards,

Marie

MIKE!

what i ordered. hopefully it will fit. supposed to get it today.

Marie

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Mike.

That’s cool. Plus a party sounds exhausting. This weekend, no matter what I do, I’m keepin it LOW KEY!! And I’m not going to drink alot either.

So yea, I’ll be in touch, and maybe we can just “chill” someplace. :) Marie
Mike- I was hoping you’d email me more details, but I guess I’ll just ask -
Like, how much are tickets? what time would we leave on Friday?  If we are
there Friday – Sunday night, where are we going to sleep?
So I thought about it and… I’m sorta back and forth with my decision…
Since I just took a road trip last weekend, 8 hrs of driving back n forth,
I feel like I really need to stay home this weekend and get some much
needed errands done. One of them being getting caught up on sleep. I
haven’t been sleeping well the past few nights (which is nothing new) but I
can feel it catching up with me and I am actually excited about being able
to just sleep in Saturday morning, followed by napping here and there
throughout the afternoon.  (geeesh I sound lame)
The Derby trip sounds like so much fun, and there’s a part of me that
really wants to go and experience it, but the other part is pulling on my
leg going, “No dammit! I want sleep!”  Damn multiple personalities! They’re
at it again!

Marie
Oh Mike,
Its too bad too, because I have this huge floppy white hat I bought in FL
while I was down there. I’d have to find a summer dress tho – The only one
I have right now is white, but I can’t wear it with the hat because its
breaking the “white” rule before Memorial Day and I wouldn’t want to be a
“Don’t do this” in the back of a Cosmo magazine.
My other plan was to venture into the mall during my lunch break and find a
cute summer dress (which would be fairly easy) and just pack some things
tonight.

Anyway, get back to me when you can.  Maybe you can convince me to go.

Best Regards,

Marie

Heyyyyyy Mike,

We both know I’m not good with words, or writing people, but I decided to
try and email you my thoughts.
Just wanted to let you know that even though we aren’t a good fit
relationship-wise, I still think the world of you, and I hope that we can
be friends.   I don’t want there to be any awkwardness between us, but I
have a feeling there might be just a teeny tiny bit. Over time, the tiny
bits turn into tiny fragments that turn into tiny particles, that turn into
molecules that eventually combust into air.  And I’m pretty sure that’s how
trees are born, but don’t take my word for it.

I’ve had a very adventurous past few months with you, and I definitely
enjoyed every minute of our time together.
It does make me sad to think that there could have been more to embark
upon, and I’ll sometimes wonder, “well, what if..”
But I try not to ponder on questions that I can’t always find an answer
for.

Anyways, I’m going to keep this short so I don’t end up rambling on about
life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and how marshmallows are made…
Its very interesting actually and I’ll have to tell you about sometime.

Have a good day, and I’m sure I’ll see ya around sometime :)

Lisa

FOOL’S GOLD

In a perfect world, everyone would be living the Fifth Element ending when technology meets romance.  In the bleak world of Lexington, KY  this happens.

it doesn’t even look comfortable.

I”M INTO YOU IN EVERY WAY

December 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

these are links other people liked enough to send me:

most people think taylor dayne is a one hit wonder.  not true!  in her later career she drops the funky dance moves and becomes more “real”, letting the camera catch glimpses of a more vulnerable, casual pop girl – or, excuse me – woman.

she’s no one trick pony.  who knew someone with so much talent could still be sexy?

this is what i was like in middle school.

and this is what don johnson does in his spare time:

i can’t watch it all the way through.  tell me what happens at the end.
